October 2015

Looking back over the half term, I’m pleased to celebrate some highlights. For the third year running, our Year 11 students have maintained their high standards in the GCSE examinations. In the most important indicator, that is the number of pupils gaining 5 A* – C grades including Maths and Welsh and/or English, 68% of our pupils gained the qualification compared with Ceredigion and Wales averages of 62% and 58% respectively.

Our Year 13 students enjoyed considerable success, with 28% gaining the higher A* A grades (11% up on last year) and 86% gaining A* – C grades (7% up on last year). 98% of our students gained their first choice university places and 93% of our students gained  A* – C grades in the Welsh Bac.
Excellent and congratulations to our students and their teachers!

Congratulations to Lleucu Ifans 12D who was awarded the title of Welsh Young Ambassador of the Year by Hockey Wales in a ceremony in the Vale Hotel at the start of the half term holiday.

Great news today  – Hannah Evans and Betsan Jones’ Design Technology work has been nominated for the WJEC Innovation Award. This is quite an honour and both they and their families will be invited to a special ceremony in Cardiff before Christmas.

Congratulations to Anita Jacob and Clare Taylor (and the support team) from the SEN Dept. on being acknowledged as a ‘Centre of Excellence’  in recognition of ‘outstanding practice in running ASDAN courses during 2014-2105… specifically in relation to Creative Teaching and Learning’.

We received some excellent news last week confirming that we have been selected as one of the Welsh Government’s pioneer schools. We are looking forward to networking with other pioneer schools around Wales and share good practice in teaching, learning and training initiatives.

Congratulations to Cadi Jones, Betsan Jones and Meinir Davies, our Senior Debating Team on battling their way through to the final round of the Rotary debating competition, which will be held at the Senedd building later in the month.

Musical Achievements: We are proud of the success of Lucy Hill (9D) and Beca Jones (7D) on being chosen for the Ceredigion Senior Orchestra. Quite an achievement considering their age! Also it was a real pleasure to see so many of our pupils performing in last night’s performance staged by the Ceredigion Intermediate Ensemble Orchestra and Wind Band here at Bro Pedr.

Cynrychiolodd y canlynol yr ysgol / The following represented the school: Eleri James, Emma Herbert, Lauren Hill, Liberty Yospa, Megan Mai Jones, Undeg Jones, Aisvarya Sridar, Holly Cooper, Lucy Hill & Nia Becca Jones.

Congratulations to Sioned Martha Yr.13 on winning the Literature Medal at the Llandyfaelog Eisteddfod last Saturday. This is her 6th medal / chair to date!

Great News – A big congratulations to Morgan Lewis, Cadi Jones and Nest Jenkins! The three students have been selected to join the Urdd’s Patagonia visit in 2016, the only students selected from Ceredigion. Quite an achievement considering that there were around a hundred applications from across Wales. Again, a big congratulations to them.
